AASHE’s currently getting ready for this year’s Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference at the University of Maryland, College Park, March 31 - April 2, 2008 and we are super excited!! If you’re planning on attending, I encourage you to come to our display table and chat with us.
Niles, Judy, Julian, Matt (an AASHE Student Intern, and I will all be there, so come with questions, suggestions, and comments.
We’ll be giving all of our presentations on the last day, April 2. Here’s what we’ve got going on:
April 2nd
8:30 - 10:00am - Grand Ball Room
Plenary Session “President’s Climate Commitment”
Moderator: Lee Bodner, Executive Director, ecoAmerica
Marshall E. Drummond (Chancellor, Los Angeles Community College District), Johnathan C. Gibralter (President, Frostburg State University), and C. D. Mote (President, University of Maryland College Park ) will all get the chance to chat about the ACUPCC and the actions they are taking to address the commitment. The panel will feature institutions of all sizes and types: a community college district of 9 colleges, a small rural public school with a student population of around 6,000, and a large urban public university with a student population of around 36,000. This should be an interesting panel no matter if your school has signed, plans on signing, or refuses to sign the ACUPCC.

10:15am - Prince George’s Room
Assessment and Measurement
Judy Walton, Julian Dautremont-Smith, and Dave Newport (AASHE Board, U Colorado at Boulder) will be presenting on AASHE’s Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS). The session will also include presentations on the Sustainable Endowments Institute’s Campus Sustainability Report Card and on the National Wildlife Federation Report Card on Environmental Performance. So if you’re curious to find out the difference between all of these rating systems, attend this session!
12:00pm - Grand Ball Room
Channeling Student Power
Matt Harmin (one of our AASHE Student Interns working on the STARS project), Carlos Rymer (Cornell University), and Joanna Calabrese (President, University of Maryland Students for Clean Energy) will have the chance to share their campus sustainability experiences and discuss how they succeeded in their various projects. This student panel will be a great chance to hear passionate undergraduates speak about their dedication to sustainability and climate change. If you attend this session, be prepared to be inspired! (Students, faculty, and staff are all encouraged to attend this session….I’m sure you will all learn something from the movement these undergraduates have created and driven!!)
We look forward to greeting, meeting, and seeing you all again! Safe travels!
