Warren Wilson Partners with Asheville to Reduce Emissions + More

I gave Warren Wilson College’s emissions reduction partnership with Asheville first billing in this week’s AASHE Bulletin because partnerships between cities that have signed the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement and campuses that have signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) seem so logical but this is the first such partnership that I’m aware of. I’m hopeful that more and more campuses will engage in these kind of partnerships.
Also in the Bulletin this week is the wonderful news that University of Wyoming has signed the ACUPCC. This means that only 4 states - North Dakota, Nebraska, Mississippi and West Virginia - have no ACUPCC signatories!
What do you think about this week’s issue of the Bulletin?

Outstanding.
Do emisions also incorporate volatile organic compounds, which result from coatings, finishes, etc or is it only related to energy related emissions?

Hi Dave,
Good question. My understanding is that the partnership between Warren Wilson and Asheville is focused on the greenhouse gas emissions covered under the Kyoto Protocol, which are mostly generated through combustion of fossil fuels. Obviously though, campuses should also be working to improve indoor air quality and reducing emissions of volatile organic compounds as well.
Best,
Julian
